What is Media Hive?

Media Hive is is a forum for those interested in sharing information and experience related to media and interdisciplinary arts including audio, video, dance, and visual art. One of the main activities of Media Hive will be a collaborative workshop / performance happening at Santa Fe Complex on the third Saturday of each month. The workshops will be open to all who wish to take part and the public will be invited to attend the performances. The program is supported in part through a grant from the Santa Fe Arts Commission.

The four components of Media Hive will be the workshop, the performance, the blog, and occasional workshops and performances by invited artists.

The Workshop:

On a monthly basis, a one-hour workshop will be offered to the public on a broad variety of topics driven by the needs and interests of the participants. Instead of depending on outsiders coming in to give presentations, the Media Hive workshop participants themselves will be encouraged to create their own presentations to share what they know with the rest of the group. The more diverse the group becomes, the more topics can be covered, and the more learning opportunities will arise. The workshop will serve many purposes, including:

• Providing a venue to demonstrate and address the possibilities and challenges of creating media and interdisciplinary art.
• Providing a venue for the participants to share information on approaches to,
and techniques for, dealing with problematic artistic issues through hardware,
software, or conceptual means.
• Creating an inviting space which will encourage anyone in the community with
an interest in the subject to come, learn, and join the group.
• Being a source of educational content to be documented and archived.

The Performance:

Following the workshop, a performance will be given by Media Hive participants. Those who attend one workshop / performance will be encouraged to collaborate with other attendees to create a performance for another month. The performance is intended to serve many purposes, including:

• Being a public showcase for media and interdisciplinary art.
• Being a venue where people are encouraged to take chances and experiment in artistic creation and performance.
• Creating an environment which encourages people to collaborate; both those looking for others sharing similar interests to work with and those looking to try something new and different.
• Being a public event which will attract those who may be curious about media and interdisciplinary art, but may not consider themselves the sort to attend a workshop.

The Blog:

The Media Hive blog (you’re here now!) will be both an archive of educational materials produced at the workshops and a forum which will allow for information sharing to happen more spontaneously. Participants in the online component of Media Hive will be able to post to the site and hold discussions on topics relevant to the goals of the program. Information will be archived on the site for visitors to explore, including:

• Video documentation of the workshops and performances.
• Information on the presenters and participants.
• Posts and discussions on topics related to relevant subject matter.

Performances by invited artists:

The establishment of Media Hive as an ongoing happening will offer an appropriate venue for hosting a performance by an invited artist, whose work reflects the interests and goals of the group.
